The world’s largest intact caldera and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a natural amphitheatre with the Big Five in a single day.
The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most extraordinary wildlife arenas on Earth. Formed when a giant volcano collapsed two to three million years ago, it is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera — roughly 260 square kilometres of crater floor enclosed by walls 600 metres high.
That enclosed world supports an exceptionally dense, year-round wildlife population. It is one of the very few places where you can realistically see all of the Big Five in a single day’s game drive.
Ngorongoro sits naturally between Tarangire and the Serengeti on the Northern Circuit. Most journeys include a full-day crater descent with a night or two on the rim. See our Serengeti safaris →
