Serengeti National Park

Endless golden plains, the Great Migration and Africa’s densest big-cat populations — witnessed from your own private vehicle.

The Field Report

The world’s greatest safari

The Serengeti National Park is the beating heart of a Tanzania safari. Its name comes from the Maasai word siringet — “the place where the land runs on forever” — and that is exactly the feeling: nearly 15,000 square kilometres of open savannah supporting one of the last great wildlife spectacles on Earth.

It is most famous for the Great Migration, the year-round movement of over a million wildebeest shadowed by lions, cheetah, leopard and crocodile. Even outside migration season the resident wildlife is extraordinary and all of the Big Five can be seen.

The migration through the year

  • January – March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu — hundreds of thousands of births and intense predator action.
  • April – June: The herds move north and west; the Grumeti River crossings begin.
  • July – September: The iconic Mara River crossings in the north.
  • October – December: The herds return south as the short rains green the plains.

Regions of the Serengeti

We tailor your route to the season. The Seronera Valley offers superb year-round game viewing; the northern Serengeti is migration-crossing country from July; the southern plains and Ndutu are calving territory. See our Great Migration guide →

Good to Know

Questions, answered

What travellers most want to know before they begin.

When is the best time to see the Great Migration?
River crossings of the Mara River typically peak July to September in the northern Serengeti. The calving season runs roughly late January to March in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu.
How many days should I spend in the Serengeti?
Three to four nights lets you explore different regions and improves your chances with the migration and big cats. Many travellers combine it with Ngorongoro and Tarangire over 7 to 8 days.
Can you do a Serengeti safari and Zanzibar in one trip?
Yes. A Serengeti-to-Zanzibar bush-and-beach itinerary is one of our most requested journeys, usually around 10 days with an internal flight to the coast.
Is the Serengeti good for first-time safari-goers?
Exceptional. Open plains make wildlife easy to spot, all of the Big Five are present, and the lodge and airstrip network is well developed while still feeling wild.
