Southern Circuit

Ruaha and Nyerere (Selous) — Tanzania’s vast, remote and gloriously empty wilderness, for those who want the bush almost to themselves.

The Field Report

Tanzania’s wild, uncrowded south

While most safaris head to the Northern Circuit, the Southern Circuit rewards those who venture further with vast, remote parks and a genuine sense of exclusivity. This is the place for repeat Africa travellers, photographers and anyone who wants the wilderness without the crowds.

The parks

  • Ruaha National Park: Tanzania’s largest — rugged baobab country with huge lion prides and big elephant herds.
  • Nyerere National Park (Selous): one of Africa’s largest protected areas, famed for boat safaris along the Rufiji past hippo, crocodile and wild dog.
  • Mikumi & Udzungwa: accessible add-ons — open plains and forested mountains rich in endemics.

Why travellers love the South

Boat safaris, walking safaris and few other vehicles set the South apart. It combines beautifully with Zanzibar or Mafia Island for a remote bush-and-beach journey well off the beaten track. Pair it with Mafia Island →

Good to Know

Questions, answered

What travellers most want to know before they begin.

What is the Southern Circuit?
Tanzania’s largest and least-crowded parks — principally Ruaha and Nyerere (formerly the Selous Game Reserve) — known for boat safaris, wild dogs and a remote, exclusive feel.
Is it better than the Northern Circuit?
It is different rather than better. The North has the Migration and is more developed; the South is wilder, quieter and excellent for repeat travellers who want few other vehicles.
How do you get there?
Most travellers fly in by light aircraft from Dar es Salaam or connect from the Northern Circuit. Fly-in safaris keep travel time low.
When is the best time?
The dry season from June to October concentrates wildlife around water and offers the best game viewing, including boat safaris on the Rufiji River.
