Giant elephant herds beneath ancient baobabs — the Northern Circuit’s most underrated wilderness.
Tarangire National Park is one of the Northern Circuit’s best-kept secrets. Named after the Tarangire River that snakes through it, the park is defined by two things: vast herds of elephants and the dramatic ancient baobab trees that dot its rolling landscape.
In the dry season the river becomes a magnet for wildlife, drawing some of the highest elephant concentrations in Tanzania along with zebra, wildebeest, giraffe and the predators that follow them — all with noticeably fewer vehicles than the Serengeti.
Tarangire usually opens a Northern Circuit itinerary before Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. Continue to Ngorongoro →
