It is the most common question we are asked: Serengeti or Ngorongoro? They are both on the Northern Circuit, close together, and most well-composed journeys include both. But if you must understand the difference, here it is.
Vast — about 15,000 km² of open plains. Home to the Great Migration, the densest big-cat populations in Africa, and an immense sense of space. Best for: the Migration, big cats, scale and multi-day immersion.
Compact and concentrated — a 260 km² caldera floor with extraordinarily dense, year-round wildlife. One of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five (including black rhino) in a single day. Best for: guaranteed game viewing, dramatic scenery, time-poor travellers.
Experience both. They are an hour apart and complement each other perfectly. A 5–7 day Northern Circuit covers both comfortably. Serengeti safaris → / Ngorongoro safaris →
