Serengeti vs Ngorongoro

Two icons, two very different experiences. Here is how they compare — and why the answer is usually both.

Comparison Guide

Two icons, one question

It is the most common question we are asked: Serengeti or Ngorongoro? They are both on the Northern Circuit, close together, and most well-composed journeys include both. But if you must understand the difference, here it is.

The Serengeti

Vast — about 15,000 km² of open plains. Home to the Great Migration, the densest big-cat populations in Africa, and an immense sense of space. Best for: the Migration, big cats, scale and multi-day immersion.

The Ngorongoro Crater

Compact and concentrated — a 260 km² caldera floor with extraordinarily dense, year-round wildlife. One of the best places in Africa to see the Big Five (including black rhino) in a single day. Best for: guaranteed game viewing, dramatic scenery, time-poor travellers.

Side by side

  • Size & feel: Serengeti = endless wilderness; Ngorongoro = enclosed amphitheatre.
  • Migration: Serengeti only.
  • Rhino: Ngorongoro is far more reliable.
  • Time needed: Serengeti 3–4 nights; Ngorongoro one full day.

The honest answer

Experience both. They are an hour apart and complement each other perfectly. A 5–7 day Northern Circuit covers both comfortably. Serengeti safaris →  /  Ngorongoro safaris →

Good to Know

Quick answers

The short version, if you are skimming.

Should I choose Serengeti or Ngorongoro?
Most travellers should experience both — they are close together and offer complementary experiences. Choose Serengeti alone only with very limited time and a focus on the Migration.
Can you see the Big Five in both?
Ngorongoro offers a more reliable Big Five day, especially for rhino. The Serengeti has them all too but spread across a much larger area.
How many days for both?
A 5 to 7 day Northern Circuit comfortably covers Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
